From the Flying University to the shed
Born Maria Sklodowska in Russian-ruled Warsaw, where universities were closed to women and Polish patriotism was policed, she studied in the clandestine “Flying University” and worked as a governess to fund her sister’s Paris medical studies — then followed, taking first place in her Sorbonne physics degree while living on tea and radishes. In Pierre Curie she found the rarest scientific partnership: a first-rank physicist who put his own instruments and career at the service of her problem — Becquerel’s newly noticed uranium rays.
Her insight was foundational: the radiation was an atomic property, unaffected by chemistry — a crack in the era’s indivisible atom. She named the phenomenon radioactivity, and in 1898 the Curies announced two new elements: polonium, named for her partitioned homeland, and radium. Proving radium existed took four years in a leaking shed, stirring tonnes of pitchblende residue with an iron rod to isolate a decigram of salt that glowed — she wrote of the “faint fairy lights” they visited at night — and earned the couple, with Becquerel, the 1903 Nobel in Physics (Marie included only after Pierre’s protest at her omission).
The price list
Pierre died under a wagon’s wheels in 1906; Marie took his Sorbonne chair — its first woman — and in 1911 won an unshared Nobel in Chemistry for radium and polonium, weeks after the French press had savaged her over an affair with the married physicist Paul Langevin (the Academy suggested she skip the ceremony; she attended). She refused on principle to patent radium — “radium is an element; it belongs to the people” — while the industry built on it sold luminous dials and tonics whose workers and customers her element quietly killed. In the Great War she built and drove the mobile X-ray cars — “petites Curies” — training 150 women operators and bringing radiography to over a million wounded men, with her teenage daughter Irène at her side.
She died on 4 July 1934 of aplastic anaemia — her decades of exposure, laboratory and X-ray both, presented at last; her cookbooks and notebooks remain radioactive, consulted at the Bibliothèque nationale by signature and protective agreement, and she was buried in a lead-lined coffin. The next year Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie won the family’s third scientific Nobel for artificial radioactivity. In 1995 France moved Marie and Pierre to the Panthéon — the first woman honoured there for her own achievements — where the Warsaw governess lies among the great men whose institutions once required persuading to admit she existed.
