The 14 July 1789 Storming of the Bastille Prison That Released Seven Inmates and Started the French Revolution
A Parisian crowd stormed the Bastille fortress prison on 14 July 1789. Bernard-René de Launay surrendered after the outer gates fell. The crowd released seven inmates and killed the governor. The date became the French national holiday in 1880.
