The Gregorian Calendar Reform of 1582, When Ten Days Vanished From October
In October 1582, by papal bull, Thursday the 4th was followed by Friday the 15th: ten days deleted to repair the drifting Julian calendar. Catholic states jumped at once; Protestant and Orthodox ones held out for decades or centuries — Britain until 1752, Russia until 1918 — leaving Europe running on two dates at once, and folklore insisting mobs rioted for their stolen eleven days.
