The Battle of Stalingrad ran from 23 August 1942 to 2 February 1943. Soviet forces encircled and destroyed the German Sixth Army under Friedrich Paulus. Approximately 700,000 Axis and 478,000 Soviet military casualties were inflicted. About 40,000 Soviet civilians died. The battle was the strategic turning point of the Second World War in Europe.
