The Coordinated Pueblo Uprising of August 1680 That Drove the Spanish Out of New Mexico for Twelve Years
A coordinated revolt of approximately 24 Pueblo communities in New Mexico, organised secretly by the Tewa religious leader Po'pay over five years, began on 10 August 1680 and drove the Spanish colonial administration entirely out of the province within three weeks. About 400 Spanish colonists were killed. The Spanish did not return until 1692.
