The Roman Cardinal Whose 1417 Election at Constance Finally Ended the Forty-Year Western Schism
Oddone Colonna was elected pope on 11 November 1417 at the Council of Constance after the council had deposed two rival papal claimants and accepted the third's voluntary abdication. He took the regnal name Martin V. His election ended the Western Schism that had divided Catholic Europe for thirty-nine years.
