The British Army Surgeon Whose Body at the 1865 Post-Mortem Was Discovered to Be Female
Dr James Barry served as a British Army surgeon for fifty years (1813–1864), rose to Inspector General of Hospitals, performed one of the first recorded successful Caesarean sections in which both mother and child survived, and was discovered at the substantial 1865 post-mortem laying-out to have been anatomically female.
