The Soviet Red Army launched the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation on 16 April 1945 with approximately 2.5 million troops. The Battle of Berlin lasted from 20 April to 2 May 1945. Adolf Hitler shot himself in the Führerbunker on the afternoon of 30 April 1945. The Berlin garrison commander General Helmuth Weidling surrendered to Soviet General Vasily Chuikov at 06:00 on 2 May 1945.
