The Quintinshill Rail Disaster of 22 May 1915, Which Burned a Battalion Before It Reached Gallipoli
At Quintinshill near Gretna, a troop train carrying the 7th Royal Scots to embarkation for Gallipoli ran into a local train parked on the main line; an express then ploughed into the wreck, and fire from gas-lit wooden coaches consumed it. Around 226 died, mostly soldiers — Britain's worst rail disaster, caused by two signalmen's shortcuts.
