Mallory and Irvine, Last Seen 'Going Strong for the Top' of Everest on 8 June 1924
George Mallory — who answered 'Because it's there' — and 22-year-old Sandy Irvine were last glimpsed through a break in the clouds high on Everest's northeast ridge on 8 June 1924. Mallory's body was found in 1999, remarkably preserved at 8,155 metres; Irvine's partial remains only in 2024. Whether they reached the summit 29 years before Hillary and Tenzing remains mountaineering's great open question.
