The Green Children of Woolpit, the Twelfth Century's Strangest Well-Documented Story

Sometime in the mid-1100s, two children with green-tinged skin, speaking an unknown language, appeared at harvest time near the Suffolk village of Woolpit. Two sober chroniclers recorded it. The boy sickened and died; the girl thrived, lost her colour, learned English, and said they came from a twilight land called St Martin's. The best modern guess involves Flemish orphans and severe malnutrition — but nobody knows.
