The Paris Commune ruled the French capital from 18 March to 28 May 1871. It was established after the Franco-Prussian War defeat and the bourgeois Versailles government's attempt to disarm Paris. The Versailles army retook the city in the Semaine Sanglante ("Bloody Week") of 21-28 May 1871, killing approximately 10,000-15,000 Communards in street fighting and executions.
